OSTEOPATHY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ACCOUNT

Section 126 of the Osteopaths Act 2001 provides that the Board shall establish a Osteopathy Education and Research Account. Such amounts as are determined by the Minister from time to time are to be paid into the Account by the Board from fees payable under this Act or the Regulations.

Pursuant to section 126 of the Act the monies in the account may be used for any of the following purposes:

• osteopathy education,
• education or research for any public purpose connected with the practice of osteopathy,
• the publication and distribution of information concerning the Osteopaths Act and the regulations,
• meeting administrative expenditure incurred with respect to the Account and the purposes for which it is used,

or any related purpose.

An expenditure of money is not to be made from the account unless it is authorised by a resolution supported by at least 5 members of the Board.

Grants from the Osteopathy Education and Research Account

In February 2008, following a tender process, the Board awarded a grant of $43,168.75 from its Education and Research account for a research project to develop a best practice model for skills assessment based on an identification of assessment strategies that will best reflect a candidate’s skill against competencies and capabilities which meet current and future needs for the osteopathy profession.
The project was undertaken by a team at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and supported by the Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA).
