TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
Section 13(1) of the Osteopaths Act 2001 provides that the Board may grant to a person a certificate of
Temporary Registration, if the person is not normally resident in New South Wales, for the purpose of enabling
the person to carry out educational or research activities or such other activities as the Board considers to
be in the public interest.
Section 13(3) of the Act provides that Temporary Registration can only be granted to a person:-

who is registered as an osteopath in accordance with a law in force in the person's normal place of residence
providing for the registration or certification of osteopaths, or
-
who holds such qualifications or has such experience in the practice of osteopathy as the Board considers
satisfactory for the purposes of temporary registration.
Section 13(5) of the Act provides that the Board a certificate of Temporary Registration may be
granted for such periods that the Board determines.
Section 13(6) of the Act provides that the Board may extend a certificate of Temporary Registration.
Section 13(8) of the Act provides that the Board may impose such conditions as it thinks fit on the
Temporary Registration of a person, and may remove or vary those conditions.
There are two categories for Temporary Registration, as follows:
Temporary Registration for a Period of Less Than 3 Months
Temporary registration may be granted to osteopaths who are wishing to practice osteopathy for a period of
less than three months. Temporary Registration may be upgraded to full registration for an additional fee and
a separate application is made. 50% of the full registration fee applies for this category of registration.
If Applying for Temporary Registration for a period of less than 3 months you must have a recognised
qualification, in accordance with the Osteopaths Act 2001 or have current registration in another
jurisdiction in Australia or New Zealand, in accordance with the Mutual Recognition Act 1992.
Temporary Registration for Special Circumstances
Temporary registration may be granted in special circumstances where an osteopath is travelling to NSW for a
specific event. These include:

Accompanying sporting teams competing in NSW

Practising osteopathy in NSW at a conference or workshop

Studying or training at postgraduate level

Teaching
-
Research
-
Performing clinical demonstrations
-
Participating in a defence exercise
Conditions on registration for temporary registration in special conditions:
-
May only treat a team or group member
-
Registration is for the specific purpose for which the application is made.

Registration is limited to the duration of the special event under which the application has been made.

Not entitled to full registration unless a separate application is made.
No fee is applicable to this category of temporary registration
Application Procedures

requirements, which must accompany the application form, are outlined in the form. A checklist is appended
to assist applicants in complying with the Board’s requirements.
Completed applications will be considered by the Board at its next scheduled meeting following receipt of
the application.
Applications will be considered on their individual merits.
Applicants must not assume that temporary registration will be granted and must wait for advice of
approval before commencing practice.
